Day #4 handmade ornaments

Os enfeites handmade são uma presença constante na casa de qualquer crafter! :) Curioso que não tenho nenhum enfeite feito por mim para a árvore de Natal. Já fiz imensos ao longo dos anos mas sempre oferecidos ou enviados em troquinhas! Por outro lado, tenho uma grande colecção de lindas peças que fui recebendo ao longo dos anos, enviadas dos quatro cantos do globo :D

Costumo espalhar os diferentes bordados e feltros pela casa, cada qual num sitio especial. Este ano fiz algo diferente. Temos um conjunto de prateleiras onde colocamos várias fotos da família e amigos, uma espécie de memorabilia, com momentos que gostamos de recordar :) Resolvi decorar essas mesmas prateleiras, intercalando as fotos com os enfeites handmade que me recordam cada amiga que os fez :D Não vos irei mostrar aqui no blog porque são fotos pessoais (e não apenas nossas), não é algo que vá publicar aqui mas garanto-vos que ficou um display bonito =)

Para preencher a lacuna dos enfeites feitos por mim, reuni algumas ideias de peças que tenho mesmo de tentar fazer :D Acho que vocês conseguem adivinhar qual é o mais especial aqui ;) hehehehe



Handmade ornaments are a constant presence in any crafter's house! :) It's curious the fact than I don't have one single tree ornament made by.. me :p I've done plenty over the years but always offering or sending on exchanges! On the other hand, I have a large collection of beautiful pieces I've been gathering over the years, sent from all four corners of the globe :D

I usually spread the different stitched and felted pieces around the house, each one in a special place. This year I did something different. We have a set of shelves where we put photos of family and friends, a sort of memorabilia, with moments we like to remember :) I decided to decorate those same shelves, placing between the photos, all the handmade ornaments that remind me each friend who made it :D I won't show you here because it has personal pictures (not just ours), it's not something that I'll publish but I assure you it's a beautiful display =)

To fill the gap of my own handmade ornaments, I have a list of ideas that I really need to give it a try :D I think you can guess which one is most special on the mosaic ;) hehehehe

Day #3 wreath & tutorials

Há dois anos atrás fiz a minha primeira coroa e desde aí a porta da nossa casa nunca mais ficou 'despida'. A cada estação do ano, temos uma coroa decorada para a época :) Nem sempre nova, quando ficam em bom estado, guardo para o ano seguinte. Apenas refaço se a decoração se tiver deteriorado, o que normalmente acontece com a Primavera e o Verão, em que o Sol acaba por consumir as cores dos materiais expostos.

Seria de esperar que também fizesse uma coroa para esta época que tanto gosto, não era? Vários anos antes de começar a fazer as minhas coroas, comprei uma de Natal e tem sido presença constante todos os anos. Ainda não se degradou nada, nem mesmo pelo facto de estar do lado de fora da casa, o tempo de inverno ainda não deixou marcas :p E, por isso, não tenho razão para fazer outra, não sou capaz de me desfazer de uma peça fofa que ainda se encontra em óptimo estado. Em Dezembro de 2013, lá está ele, o nosso boneco de neve, a dar as boas-vindas a quem chega :D

Two years ago I made my first wreath and since then the door of our house is never 'naked'. Every season, we have our wreath decorated with a theme :) Not always new, if it's still in good condition, I save it for the next year. I just redo the decor if the weather has deteriorated it, what usually happens on Spring and Summer, when the sun eventually consumes the colors of the exposed materials.

You probably expect I would have an handmade wreath for this season that I love so much, right? Well, several years before starting to make my wreaths, I bought one for Christmas and it has been a constant presence every year. It hasn't deteriorated at all, not even by being exposed outside of the house, the winter weather hasn't made any damage yet :p So, I have no reason to make another, I can't throw away something so cute that still looks as new. December 2013, there it is again, our snowman, giving a warm welcome to everyone :D

What about your door, is it formally 'dressed' to welcome Santa? For those who need ideas, I leave you some suggestions and tutorials :)

DIY °•● round ornament

Há duas semanas atrás, estive a explicar a uma amiga como faço os meus enfeites redondos, já que ando numa onda de tutoriais, fotografei o último que fiz. E se partilho com uma... porque não partilhar com todas? :)
A couple of weeks ago a friend asked me about how I make my round ornaments, so, I took some pictures when I finished my last snowman.
Sharing with one, why not share it with all? :)



Materiais: bordado, tecido para o verso, cartão, enchimento, cola branca, pincel, meada e molinhas para auxiliar :) O cartão e o enchimento já estão recortados na medida, o tecido e o bordado também recortei com a mesma forma redonda para facilitar a colagem e com margem ;)
Supplies: stitched piece, fabric for the back, card, batting, white glue, paintbrush, thread and little cloth spins to help :) The card and batting are already cut, the fabric and stitched piece I cut out with the same round shape but with a bit of margin ;)



Saem duas sanduíches!! :p heheheh

Utilizo as molas para posicionar o tecido e não correr o risco que fique tudo descentrado ;) Pincelo cola branca no cartão e nas margens do tecido para que as pontinhas fiquem bem coladas. Depois de seco, volto a usar as molas para unir as duas partes uma à outra, com cola branca no meio.
I use the cloth spins to position the fabric and not to risk everything to be uncentered ;) Brush white glue on the card and the edges of the fabric so that the tips will bond really well. Once it's dry, I use the cloth spins to hold both parts, with white glue in the middle.





As partes unidas, falta apenas colocar o cordão para finalizar :) Mas não coloquei nenhum cordão na primeira foto, apenas uma meada, não foi?
Both parts together and it's time to finish with the cord :) But I didn't put any cord in the first picture, only one thread, right?

De certo que eu não inventei a roda, nem descobri a pólvora! hehehe
Aprendi isto com a Ruby, foi a técnica para fazer a corda do baloiço ;) Basta torcer as pontas até que a dada altura a meada torce-se sobre ela própria:
For sure I didn't invent the wheel or find out the gunpowder! hehehe I learned this with Ruby, this was the technique to make the rope for the swing ;) Just twist the ends until the thread coil by itself:



Usei verde e vermelho para verem melhor o efeito na foto, para o meu enfeite fiz apenas com uma cor. Isto é uma solução excelente para quando queremos um cordão com duas cores ou com uma cor especifica que não conseguimos encontrar na loja! :) Mais uma vez, cola branca em uso, aplica-se o cordão à volta do enfeite e voilá :D
I used green and red so you can see better on the pictures, for my ornament I made ​it ​with just one color. This is a great solution when we want a cord with 2 colors or when we can't find the exact color that we are looking for! :) Brush a bit of white glue, apply the cord around the ornament and voilá :D

DIY °•● string bag

Não se esqueçam que sou amadora na arte das costuras :p Com a ajuda das fotos, vou tentar explicar como faço os meus saquinhos, qualquer dúvida perguntem! Terei todo o prazer em tentar explicar melhor :)

Don't forget that I'm an amateur in the art of sewing :p With pictures to help, I'll try to explain how I make my string bags. Any doubt, feel free to ask, I'll try to explain better :)

Notas sobre os tecidos a usar:
- tecido branco: com a mesma altura do bordado e 2cm a mais de largura. Não ficará visível, serve apenas de camada de fundo para não se ver a estampa/cor do tecido que ficará do outro lado
- tecido estampado, com mais 2cm de largura em relação ao bordado e o comprimento.. dependerá do tamanho do saquinho que querem fazer! Eu faço os saquinhos com forro por isso utilizo uma peça comprida para evitar muitas costuras. Mas vejam o tutorial até ao fim e irão perceber como funciona ;)

Notes about the fabric to use:
- White fabric, with the same height as the cross stitched piece and more 2cm wide. This won't be visible, it's only a layer so we won't see the print/color of the fabric that will be on the other side
- Printed fabric, also with more 2 cm in width and length.. depends on the size of the bag you want to make! I make my bags with the same fabric for liner so I use a long piece to avoid many seams. But follow the tutorial and you'll see how it works ;)

Marcar as margens do tecido branco, ficará com a mesma largura do bordado
Make the hems on the white fabric, this will have the same width as the cross stitched piece



Igual com o tecido estampado
The same with the printed fabric



Temos ambas as partes com a sua bainha e medida certa
We have both parts with the same measure



Agora a primeira costura, para unir o bordado a uma das pontas do tecido. Coloca-se a frente do bordado voltada para a frente do tecido estampado, unimos bem as pontas para ficar alinhado e segue para a máquina de costura
Now sew to join the bottom of the xxx-stitched piece with the end of the fabric. Place both parts facing the front, align well and move on to the sewing machine



O mesmo para o topo do bordado e o nosso verso fica assim:

A imagem seguinte é para vos explicar como está a peça neste momento (risco vermelho é o tecido estampado, azul é o bordado e a verde são as 2 costuras):
The next picture is to explain how the piece is right now (red is the printed fabric, cross stitched piece in blue and in green our two seams):

Agora vamos dobrar a peça a nosso gosto, com o tamanho que quiserem que fique de tecido estampado acima e abaixo do bordado. Posicionam como querem, dobram a meio e temos...
Now bend the piece, place the xxx-stitched part as you wish, fold in half and you have...



... o bordado costurado na frente e o forro perfeitinho ;)
Com o tecido bem dobrado a meio, marcamos os topos onde passará a fita
... the cross stitched piece placed on the front and a perfect liner ;)
With the fabric well folded in half, mark the edges for the ribbon



E costura-se em ambas a partes do saquinho
Sew both sides of the bag



Para finalizar, é só fechar as laterais, aqui deve-se costurar o mais na margem possível e a partir da costura anterior para baixo.
Finally, just close the sides, sew as closer to edge as possible and down from the previous seam



As margens de 1cm são apenas para uma finalização mais perfeitinha, podem ver na foto seguinte. Sem a margem estariamos a ver as extremidades do tecido e não ficava tão bonito. Não fiz o mesmo para o bordado porque o tecido é mais grosso e ía dificultar ao passar na maquina de costura, tenham cuidado com a grossura para não partir agulhas ;)
I make 1cm hems for a nicer finish as you can see in the picture below. Without the hems we would be seeing the end of the fabric. I didn't do the same for the stitched fabric because the fabric is thicker and would be troubling for the sewing machine, be carefull, we don't want to break needles ;)



Para fazer o fundo basta costurar as pontas do saquinho assim:
To make the bottom just sew the corners like this

Pessoalmente, gosto mais dos saquinhos com duas fitas
I prefer to use two ribbons
